50 per cent of parlour games purchased on Galaxus are card games – and Gen Z’s driving the trend
New figures reveal more than half of parlour games bought by Galaxus customers under 25 are card games. From Skyjo to Uno to Frantic, Gen Z’s all about fast, compact, affordable games.
It seems classics like Monopoly and Risk have now been replaced with the likes of What Do You Meme? or Frantic. In other words, games that can be explained quickly, fit in any backpack and have potential to go viral on TikTok. Today, 40 per cent of parlour games bought from Galaxus are purely card-based. In 2020, that figure didn’t even reach 30 per cent. «This trend’s showing no signs of stopping,» says Senior Portfolio Development Manager, Joshua Turnbull, whose remit includes Galaxus’s range of parlour games.
Under-25s are largely responsible for the rise of Exploding Kittens, Hitster and Super Smart Blockhead. In fact, 50 per cent of the parlour games they’ve bought on Galaxus this year are card games. «They’re quicker to explain and less complex than most board games,» Joshua says. «Card games are the perfect mix of fun, speed and accessibility – exactly what young people these days are looking for.»
Another reason for the growing popularity of card games is the huge selection available. There are thousands in the Galaxus range, most of them small enough to fit into a jacket pocket.
Card games are generally cheaper than other parlour games too. On average in 2025, board games on Galaxus cost twice as much as card games (28 vs. 14 francs or euros). «Card games are ideal for people who want to shop on a budget without sacrificing fun.»
Card games such as Skyjo, Uno and Hitster are currently topping Galaxus’s sales rankings, with many likely to be sought-after Christmas presents this year. «We won’t see very much movement at the top of the sales charts before the end of the year,» Joshua says. The top 10 also includes Uno Flip!, Skip-Bo and Frantic – fun, inexpensive games you can get started quickly.
By introducing card games to evenings in with their flatmates, family get-togethers or nights at the pub, Gen Z have given the gaming world a good old shuffle.
