Bluebrixx rebuilds the "Polarstern": 3722 bricks for a piece of polar history
A ship that breaks through metre-thick polar ice deserves a worthy brick model. Bluebrixx delivers: The "Polarstern" appears as a detailed Pro-Set with AWI licence and 3722 bricks.
In the world of maritime research, the «Polarstern» plays a special role. It has been braving the most extreme conditions in the Arctic and Antarctic since 1982 and is one of the most important research vessels in the world. She breaks through metre-thick polar ice with ease, supplies remote research stations and provides data that scientists around the world use for their work.
In literature, the ship gained additional notoriety through Frank Schätzing's novel «The Swarm». Now you can have it on your desk - in 3722 individual parts.

Bluebrixx did not develop the model on its own. It was created as an officially licensed display model in close collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), which is part of the Helmholtz Association.
You will soon find the model «research icebreaker Polarstern» in our shop. And if you're looking for even more clamp building block projects: selected Bluebrixx Pro sets are currently available from us at reduced prices.
64.5 centimetre research ship for the shelf
The finished model measures 64.5 centimetres in length, 14.4 centimetres in width and 33 centimetres in height. Bluebrixx has thus realised the 118-metre-long original on a scale of 1:200. The strength of the model lies in its depth of detail. The characteristic blue hull shape, orange-coloured working cranes, a helipad including helicopter and numerous typical superstructures and antennas have been implemented.
In addition, there is a large print on the hull with the AWI and Helmholtz Association logos. The fold-out stabilisers on the fuselage are a particular eye-catcher and further enhance the design. Only the ring of the helipad cannot be printed. A sticker sheet is included here, as printing was not technically possible.
252 construction steps, eight double pages of research history
The construction is divided into 252 construction steps, divided into twelve construction stages. As a Bluebrixx Pro set, the model comes in a printed cardboard box with printed building instructions and clear step-by-step instructions
The instructions offer more than just step-by-step instructions. Eight double pages contain background information, schematic drawings and details of the AWI's research work.
An original with an expiry date and a successor under construction
The real ship itself is about to change generations. The «Polarstern II» is currently under construction at ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in Wismar. The successor will be around 160 metres long - almost 40 metres more than the original - and will enter service around 2030. The Bluebrixx model will thus preserve a piece of history before the original is retired.
