Your sunglasses are in constant use right now - here's how to care for them properly

It protects your eyes from UV radiation and, in return, gets smudged, scratched, or, in the worst case, lost. Your sunglasses deserve better. Proper care and storage, for example. Here's how.

I recently interviewed content creator Sarah Hartmann, who had launched a collection of sunglasses and corrective glasses with the Swiss brand Viu. Her statement about how astonished she was by how many people go through life with smudged lenses still occupies my mind today. Because: I am one of them.

Not a day goes by without at least one or two greasy fingerprints on the lenses of my reading glasses and sunglasses – even though I can't remember ever explicitly touching the lenses instead of the frame. Plus dust, small scratches, ... A clear view looks different. This is not only a shame for me, but above all for the lifespan of my glasses. I vow to improve immediately! And this is how:

How to clean your lenses properly

  • first it's your turn: wash your hands to remove grease and dirt
  • rinse the lenses with lukewarm tap water
  • apply mild, grease-dissolving dish soap to the lenses, spread with your fingers and rinse completely
  • gently dry the clean glasses with a microfiber cloth

Mistakes you'd better avoid

  • Using your T-shirt as a cleaning cloth on the go – sweat, residues of grease and detergent, as well as the fibers usually worsen the situation and damage your lenses in the long run
  • Drying your glasses with kitchen paper or a dish towel after washing – both can lead to micro-scratches and attack the coating of your lenses
  • Placing your glasses on the lenses, throwing them loosely into a bag, or pushing them up onto your head – this risks scratches and deformations

You can find much more detailed insights on cleaning glasses here and here. And if you also need inspiration on how best to store your glasses at home, this interview can help you:
