How good are Bud Spencer’s baked beans with bacon?

Beans feature heavily in Bud Spencer’s movies. Now you can try them for yourself – canned, available in two flavours and crafted according to the original recipe. How good is the bacon version?

Yes, the ingredients really do list bacon! But even upon closer inspection, I can’t seem to find much of it at all. Tough beans!

Homeopathic dose of meat aside, the beans are actually quite tasty. In fact, compared to your standard British baked beans (yuck!), Bud Spencer’s are positively scrumptious. They’re tomatoey and spicy with a hint of thyme. I like the large borlotti beans; they pack a punch and don’t immediately turn to mush in your mouth. As a ready-to-eat canned product, Bud Spencer’s beans hold their own.

In a nutshell

It’s not all about the bacon

Despite needing a magnifying glass to spot the bits of bacon in these beans, they’re yummy. I’m deducting one star for the lack of bacon and half a star for a hint of that tinned-food taste. Rounded up, that’s a four-star rating.

Pro

  • Well seasoned, tomatoey flavour
  • Pleasant consistency

Contra

  • Bacon in short supply

When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
