How good are Bud Spencer’s baked beans with bacon?
by Simon Balissat
Beans feature heavily in Bud Spencer’s movies. Now you can try them for yourself – canned, available in two flavours and crafted according to the original recipe. How good is the Tex-Mex version?

The print on the can promises some heat and typical Tex-Mex spices. This version of Bud Spencer’s beans is vegan. The ingredient list includes black beans, tomato concentrate, onion, spices, yeast extract (i.e. glutamate) and garlic. Garlic is indeed the first to hit my nose when I open the can. And I mean «hit» – with a biting stench. So much so I recoil in disgust.
Does it fade after cooking?
That’s one big resounding nope. What’s more, the beans taste of garlic that’s been stored in some musty old cellar. As for the advertised spiciness, it’s nowhere to be found. The first bite is hard to swallow. Afterwards I get used to the acrid taste, but still have to force down the beans. Stay away!
Pro
Contra
When I flew the family nest over 15 years ago, I suddenly had to cook for myself. But it wasn’t long until this necessity became a virtue. Today, rattling those pots and pans is a fundamental part of my life. I’m a true foodie and devour everything from junk food to star-awarded cuisine. Literally. I eat way too fast.
