Dr. Beckmann Detergent sheets
25 Washing cycles

Behold, the holy grail of detergents. Perfect for people who don’t want anything complicated.
Our love began at 40 degrees on the delicate wash cycle. I carefully tore open my bag of Dr. Beckmann Magic Leaves for the first time and immediately suspected that the two of us were in for a treat.
But more on that later.
How long had I been looking for a product that met my needs? I mean come on, I only wanted the bare minimum: a detergent should clean well, without spilling or crumbs. And it should be easy to handle too. After all, storage space in my small kitchen is limited.
Then I discovered these detergent sheets from Dr. Beckmann. They’re available as universal detergent for light-coloured fabrics and as colour detergent. The manufacturer’s promise sounded too good to be true. Effortlessly clean laundry, easy handling and dosing, 80 per cent less plastic, all touted on the back of the packaging. I was sceptical – but bought it anyway.
A pack of Magic Leaves is no thicker than a book, measuring about 25 × 18 centimetres. The standard set contains 25 sheets, which together weigh just 100 grammes. One detergent sheet is about a millimetre thick. I can simply store the pack in my small trolley with the cleaning products. No more XXL boxes to deal with. Simple and solid.

Depending on the water hardness, you need one to two sheets per wash cycle according to the dosing instructions, simply throwing them straight into the drum. There, they dissolve and… wash. No ifs, ands or buts. What’s more, they wash really well. I swear by the great god of cleaning, all my clothes, no matter how dirty, come out of the machine spick and span after a wash with Magic Leaves. Grease drops on trousers, make-up stains on shirts and even that famous stench on towels: Magic Leaves work just as well at 30 degrees as they do in a boiling wash. Even if I only put one in the drum.
But just wait, this love story goes on.
Freshly washed, fresh-smelling textiles are already great. But what always annoyed me about washing was fiddling with liquid or powder detergent. Things often went spilt, sticking to the detergent tray or the floor underneath. Magic Leaves solves even this first-world problem. Simply open the bag, take out a sheet, close the bag. That’s it. And if there’s less laundry in the drum, you simply tear a sheet in half. They’re specially perforated for just this case.
I still prefer washing wool and silk by hand with a mild shampoo. But that’s self-explanatory.

Last but not least, Magic Leaves aren’t much more expensive than «normal» detergent. One wash cycle costs about as much as the equivalent with the much more popular pods. And even if they did cost more, I’d be happy to pay those few extra francs or euros.
I don’t know who came up with this brilliant idea at Dr. Beckmann. But if you’re reading this article: thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤️
