The cycling trousers with the special seat pad impressed during testing
by Patrick Bardelli

Minimal padding, maximum performance: the philosophy behind SQlab’s cycling shorts is simple – and highly effective. The German manufacturer of ergonomic cycling products has managed to impress me with its products of late. The SQ-Shorts ONE14 are no exception.
The approach is minimalist, the result maximal. That is, if my backside has anything to say about it! German manufacturer SQlab deliberately keeps the pads in its cycling shorts thin. While other brands opt for the thickest, softest materials possible for padding, SQlab’s models all measure between four and eight millimetres. This performance-focused approach is meant to provide targeted support with minimal bulk.
According to SQlab, its seat pads relieve pressure and friction while improving blood circulation, increasing stability and delivering noticeably greater riding comfort. I already had the pleasure of experiencing these benefits last autumn. You can read my review of SQlab’s long cycling bibs here:
At the heart of these shorts is the SQ-Pad 14. According to the manufacturer, this is an ergonomically designed multi-layer pad with a total thickness of six millimetres. Its integrated layer of thermoplastic elastomers, or TPE for short, is supposed to specifically reduce shear forces, pressure and vibrations – all without restricting freedom of movement.
When I first tried SQlab pants in autumn, it took me a while to get used to the minimalist pad. After so many soft and comparatively bulky pads I’d ridden with before, the pad felt strange without the TPU layer. Somehow too thin and a little stiff. I’ve got used to it since, so the SQ-Shorts ONE14 felt familiar straight away.

The SQ-Shorts ONE14, developed specifically for gravel rides, are spot on in terms of comfort. That may sound a little over the top, but before every ride I genuinely look forward to pulling on these bib shorts. With their wide straps and elastic leg grippers, the shorts fit like a glove – there’s no slipping or digging in while riding.
The integrated leg pockets on the right and left offer room for an energy bar or two, and can even hold your phone. According to SQlab, the shorts are made from a high-quality recycled polyamide-elastane blend that promises durability, flexibility and comfort. In my experience, that promise holds up. The material is abrasion-resistant, soft against the skin and has so far provided good temperature and moisture regulation. I’ve yet to see how it holds up in the blazing heat of summer. According to SQlab, the SQ-Shorts ONE14 are produced in Europe with short transport routes and fair working conditions.

The SQ-Shorts ONE14, provided to me by SQlab, have won me over. After first getting familiar with the brand’s minimalist pad concept last autumn and winter with the long pants, I’m stoked to keep riding comfortably on my gravel bike this spring – and hopefully all the way through summer.
Comfort is very high thanks to the wide straps and elastic leg grippers, while the abrasion-resistant material feels pleasant against the skin. The cargo-style leg pockets easily carry provisions, a repair tool and your phone. The material of the shorts is certified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100, with the main fabrics additionally Bluesign approved.
All this has won the SQ-Shorts ONE14 a spot in my favourites, despite their hefty price tag.
