This sleeping mat looks comfortable and it is too

Ideally, a sleeping pad should be comfortable, lightweight, and robust. However, this combination is rare. My recommendation: The Rapid SL Insulated from Big Agnes.

Squeezed between the tent floor and the sleeping bag, sleeping pads often lead a shadowy existence. Unjustly so. Because a comfortable base is crucial for a good night's sleep. And therefore also for the amount of energy you can muster for your outdoor adventures the next day.

I became aware of the sleeping pads from Big Agnes at the outdoor trade fair at Lake Garda and had the opportunity to receive a test model from the manufacturer. I chose the wide version of the Rapid SL Insulated, which is 183 centimeters long and 63.5 centimeters wide. However, it is also available with a length of 198 centimeters and a width of 51 centimeters.

The Big Agnes Rapid SL sleeping pad is not ultralight, but at around 650 grams, it is still within a reasonable range. I have had ultralight mats before that were so fragile that they already had a hole after the first night on the forest floor. I want to avoid that.

My demands for comfort have also increased. Probably because I've gotten older and have less tolerance for poor sleep and aching bones in the morning. That's why the Rapid SL Insulated mat from Big Agnes definitely seems worth a try to me.

Pack size and accessories

The insulated mat is delivered tightly rolled up in a stuff sack. Also included are an inflation sack and a repair kit, which I hope I won't need. Together, everything is not much larger than a one-liter water bottle.

Rolled up small, the mat is easy to transport.

When unpacking, I like the robust material. The two separate inflation and deflation valves are a welcome feature. If the inflation sack accidentally detaches from the valve while inflating, the air remains inside the mattress. When deflating, a second valve makes the job easier because it stays open and no membrane needs to be pressed down.

Practical: the two valves.

With the air-filled sack, I quickly filled the mat about halfway. I am a big fan of inflation sacks that you use to capture ambient air and force it into the mattress under pressure. Blowing into it, on the other hand, is not a good idea. The moist breath can cause mold inside the mat. Although the Rapid SL has an antimicrobial coating on the inside, this only partially reduces the risk.

Fill, roll up, that's how I can press the air into the mat.

I haven't just gotten older, I've obviously also gotten lazier. That's why I put the inflation sack aside and use a small electric pump to fully inflate the sleeping pad. Since the pump also doubles as a camping light, it's in my backpack anyway.

As you make your bed...

The sleeping pad is structured and has a height of nine centimeters in the middle. I really appreciate the thick padding. Because as a side sleeper, every extra centimeter means less pressure on the shoulders and hips. On the sides, the mat is even eleven centimeters high. This prevents me from simply sliding off the mat when turning over in my sleep at night.

At bedtime, I make myself comfortable on the air-filled base. Since it uses two layers of reflective film for thermal insulation, I had feared that it would make crackling noises with every movement. I have experienced that with other sleeping pads. However, the Big Agnes mat is pleasantly quiet. I don't hear anything when tossing and turning.

Ready for the night: I find the sleeping pad very inviting.

Actually, I can't report much about the three nights, as I was lying comfortably and slept through the night for the most part. Thanks to the structure and thickness, my base felt really comfortable. For a sleeping pad with a relatively low weight, that is remarkable.

The mattress has an R-value of 4.8. The R-value measures how well a sleeping pad prevents heat loss to the ground. The higher the R-value, the better the mat insulates. At 4.8, the Rapid SL Insulated is in the upper range of three-season mats. Combined with a foam mat on the floor, it would also be suitable for winter camping. During my test, the temperatures at night were mild at around eight degrees. I was cuddly warm the whole time.

Packing and storing

After three days in the open, it's time to head back. The air is quickly pressed out of the mat thanks to the deflation opening. I fold it lengthwise to a third of its size and roll it up. So far, so simple. Then I try to stow it back in the transport sack. That is quite a fiddly job. Obviously, I hadn't rolled it as tightly as I thought. On the second attempt, it works. But a few centimeters more fabric on the packaging cover would make packing much easier.

In a nutshell

The sleeping mat hits the sweet spot between weight and comfort

If you are looking for a sleeping pad that is comfortable and warm, the Rapid SL Insulated from Big Agnes could be the solution for you. Thanks to the textured surface with air chambers, you lie comfortably. The thickness of nine to eleven centimeters is also suitable for side sleepers. The mat is easy to inflate and did not lose any air during the three days. Only the stuff sack is a bit tight.

Pro

  • lightweight and compact
  • easy to inflate
  • comfortable thickness
  • good insulation
  • low noise
  • Details such as two valves and higher sides
  • antimicrobial interior coating

Contra

  • Rucksack a bit tight
