Too much of a good thing: Muc-Off eBike Ultimate Kit review

The Muc-Off eBike Ultimate Bicycle Kit Protect & Lube is impressive. However, the cleaning and care kit’s too extensive for a city e-bike. It’s a better fit if your bike arrives at the wash station with a thick layer of dirt from the trail.

I don’t usually write reviews, but when the head of our editorial team, Martin, asked me if I wanted to try out an e-bike cleaning kit, I gave in. After all, when do you ever get the chance to clean your own bike during work time?

My eyes widen when Martin hands me the kit in front of our shop in Zurich. The box is huge. I barely manage to fit it into my 26-litre backpack. The price tag’s equally overwhelming: 90 francs or 105 euros is – in my opinion – a lot for bike care. After all, I only ride a mid-range trekking e-bike, not an expensive e-mountain bike.

My four-year-old daughter’s my assistant washer. She’s delighted that the box has a pink handle and two equally bright clasps. Luckily, we find a QR code on the box that links to the manufacturer’s video instructions. Because, off the top of my head, I have no idea what to do with the two sprays called MO 94 and HC B-1, for example.

I keep the big brush

Now comes the pink foam spray. There’s «only» a risk of irritated eyes with this, so I let my daughter spray the bike liberally. Then we scrub off the dust and dirt with the cleaning sponge and large brush. I particularly like the latter – it fits comfortably in your hand and has soft bristles. I quickly put the long two-pronged brush aside, as my bike has only a few dirty spots that are difficult to reach.

Now for the most fun part: together, we thoroughly spray the bike down with the garden hose. This completes the first step: washing. But the «ultimate kit» requires two more steps: care and lubrication.

We spray the entire drivetrain with MO 94. In doing so, I learn that this includes the pedals, cranks, chainrings, chain, cassette, and derailleur. And that the spray removes moisture left over from the washing step. The spray seems OTT to me. And so far, wiping the chain with a cloth has always been enough.

The HC B-1 rust protection spray’s also excessive as far as I’m concerned. Fortunately, my bike hasn’t developed any rust even after three years of commuting and recreational cycling. The battery contacts also look clean. So, the spray goes back into the box unused.

Now for the chain lubricant. This was apparently specially developed for the forces an e-bike motor transfers to the chain, although my motor isn’t comparable to that of an e-mountain bike. The oil comes in a dry weather version and a wet weather version. I opt for the former, as I’m expecting more sunshine than rain in the coming months. Weirdly, the oil smells like gummy bears. Even my eldest daughter sniffed it out in the garage the next day.

In a nutshell

I’m not the target group

The result’s impressive: my bike’s sparkling clean, and the chain runs almost silently. However, the set’s too much for my needs. I gave the MO 94 and HC B-1 sprays and long brush to my colleague Manuel, who owns an e-mountain bike) (article in German). I’d have been fine with an all-weather version of the chain lubricant. And I already had a cleaning sponge and microfibre cloths. Hence my recommendation for people like me: for half the price, Motorex), for example, offers a slimmed-down version that I’ve always been happy with.

Pro

  • Cleans thoroughly
  • Great brush
  • Good chain lubricant
  • Manufacturer’s explanatory video

Contra

  • Toxic
  • Too big
