Instructions for use | Rectal: The most reliable core temperature readings are obtained when the thermometer is inserted into the anus (rectal measurement). The measurement is accurate and there is little margin for error in the results. The normal range is approx. 36.2 °C - 37.7 °C. Ear: This is also a very reliable method of measuring core temperature. In this case, a thermometer is used that can detect the infrared heat emitted by the eardrum. The measurement is accurate and there is little margin for error in the results. The normal range is approximately: 35.5 °C - 37.5 °C. Oral: The oral measurement can be carried out as a measurement "in the cheek" (buccal) or "under the tongue" (sublingual). Both measurements are around 0.3 °C - 0.8 °C below the rectal temperature, whereby the measurement "under the tongue" is preferable to the measurement "in the cheek". Armpit: In everyday clinical practice, the surface temperature is measured under the armpit (axillary measurement) and in the groin. In both cases, the corresponding extremity is pressed against the body in order to minimise the influence of the ambient temperature. However, this method is only successful to a limited extent and has the disadvantage that it takes a long time. In adults, the axillary reading is 0.5 °C - 1.5 °C below the rectal reading! In babies, these differences are much smaller compared to the rectal temperature.
