M is only considered hand luggage if the bag is not full and can be squeezed... otherwise it is probably too big! S fits great!

I have size S and it fits well in the overheadlocker. Bigger definitely won't fit from the length alone.
I've never tried it, but I'm pretty sure that S doesn't fit under a seat.
