Corded or cordless: Which mattress cleaner cleans better?
Mite vacuums pull an astonishing amount of dirt out of the mattress. But which model convinces me more – the one with a battery or the one with a cord?
As a non-allergy sufferer, do I absolutely need a mattress vacuum? No. Am I still shocked by how much dust and particles collect in the mattress? Yes – and not for the first time. I have tested such devices several times and am always amazed at how much they manage to suck out of the mattresses even after half a year.
For this comparison, not only is the cleaning performance important, but also a second aspect. I had the manufacturers send me two current models for the test. One vacuum is corded, the other runs on a battery. Which model is better?
Price and features: Advantages for the corded model
Although there are cheaper models in our assortment, the Hoover is in the broad middle range of the offerings.
Hoover HMC5: This model comes with a five-meter-long cable and costs 86 francs at the time of testing.
Haier i-Pro Clean V3: The competitor with an integrated battery is slightly more expensive. At the time of testing, it is 102 francs.
So, if you want to save money, get a model with a cord. There are practically no differences in terms of features. Both models loosen the dirt with a rotating brush and suck it up. In addition, they use UV light to combat microorganisms. The cheaper model with a direct power connection dries the mattress with 50-degree warm air, which is intended to prevent mold spores. With the battery-powered device, the air is 40 degrees warm. However, this one has a small advantage in terms of brush width. It measures 19 centimeters, while the corded Hoover is 17 centimeters.

Suction power: both good
On paper, the matter is clear: The battery-powered Haier i-Pro Clean V3 only manages 150 watts of power. The model without a battery has 400 watts. A clear difference, one would think. But in the everyday test, the cleaning effect seems to be similarly good – as far as I could compare it.
For this, I cleaned half of a large mattress with the battery vacuum – i.e., went over everything twice consistently. That already filled the dirt container quite a bit.

After that, I went over it again with the Hoover. The corded device still sucks up a bit of dirt.

After that, I tried the same thing on the second half with the roles (or brushes) reversed. The Hoover with a cord vacuums twice first, then the battery-powered Haier. The result is identical: Here, too, the second device picks up some more dirt.

The test therefore shows two things: It is worth vacuuming the textiles at least three times. And both devices have a similarly effective system, at least as far as is visible to the eye. For comparison, I cleaned another mattress with the Dyson V16 Piston Animal using the upholstery attachment. While it also pulls dust out of the mattress, quite a lot still remains that only the specialized devices can manage. Nevertheless, a special nozzle and a normal vacuum are an alternative for anyone who does not want to buy an additional device.
Weight and volume: lighter and quieter with battery
Surprisingly: Although the Haier i-Pro Clean V3 additionally has a battery on board, it is the lighter device at 1.4 kilograms. The corded vacuum weighs over 1.9 kilograms. The two models are similar in size.

Both vacuums are loud. With the corded Hoover, I measure 89.1 decibels, and with the Haier at the same distance, 87.9 decibels. The difference may be small on paper; however, the cheaper model seems significantly louder. Perhaps also because the sound of the fan drones more unpleasantly.
However: After about 30 minutes, the Haier goes silent, then the battery is empty. Unfortunately, charging via USB-C and vacuuming at the same time does not work. The Hoover runs as long as you need it to, thanks to the direct power connection.
Not just for the mattress
Both models clean not only mattresses but all textiles. For example, I used them to vacuum cat cushions, upholstery covers, and the bath mat. This works equally well with both the cord and the battery.
However: The concept of mite vacuums is designed for surfaces without unevenness. Then the nozzle lies flush on the material, a certain negative pressure is created, and the brush can plow through the textile. As soon as there are uneven areas, the cleaning performance drops significantly.

For the seats and floor mats in the car, for example, the vacuum would be ideal – especially in the battery version. But in the car, there is too little surface area and too many seams and bends. I clean the interior better with a normal vacuum cleaner and a small nozzle.
I am also careful with delicate fabrics. The brushes of the two vacuums scrub strongly over the textile. The device pulls out loose threads or lint. Damage is possible if you are not careful.
Conclusion: Cheap or flexible
In terms of suction power and cleaning quality, my two test candidates hardly differ. Both are convincing, both clean mattresses and textile covers better than a normal vacuum. I also hardly notice any differences in everyday maintenance. I remove the dirt container with the filter, empty it, and wash everything under running water. The brush can be unlatched and also easily cleaned.
So, before buying, only one question arises: Do I want a model with a battery, or is the power connection enough for me? With a battery, I have to invest a little more money, but I get more flexibility in return. I can easily manage five to seven classic single mattresses with one charge. Personally, I would do that, as I have used the device not only for the mattresses but also for other textiles distributed throughout the apartment from time to time. It is more practical if I don't have to constantly look for a power outlet.
