"Super Mario Bros. Wonder" returns on 26 March, technically optimised for the Switch 2. The highlight of the new edition is the Bellabel Park, a large hub area that focuses on shared game chaos and multiplayer competitions.

«Super Mario Bros. Wonder» has been available for the Switch 1 since 2023. Now Nintendo is bringing the game to its new console and offering more than just a technical refresh: The Switch 2 edition comes with an expanded multiplayer mode and a whole new game area.

You can pre-order «Super Mario Bros. Wonder» in the Switch 2 edition from us.

Bellabel Park and focus on multiplayer fun

The Bellabel Park serves as a hub area where you can launch numerous mini-games, competitions and co-op activities. The local game plaza offers 17 attractions that you can discover together on one console with up to three other fans of the legendary plumber. Your friends can also play locally with their own consoles via Game Share. This works even if they don't own the game themselves.

In the game room plaza, up to twelve people can experience six different attractions together. Such multiplayer arenas are missing in the Switch 1 version.

New features include playable characters from the «Super Mario Galaxy» universe: Rosalina and her co-star Luma. Thanks to the Switch 2's better hardware, you can enjoy a higher frame rate, shorter loading times and 4K resolution in dock mode.

Rosalina and Luma are also included in the Switch 2 edition.

This is «Super Mario Bros. Wonder»

At first glance, the game looks like a classic two-dimensional «Mario» game, only with better graphics: You jump through colourfully designed levels, collect rewards and complete challenges such as precision jumps or timing elements. In addition, «Super Mario Bros. Wonder» contains new gameplay mechanics that you won't recognise from previous «Mario» games.

For example, you can push the familiar green pipes around for the first time to reach secret areas. My colleague Domagoj, who tested «Super Mario Bros. Wonder» 2023, was impressed by the level design and layout of the game. « There is movement everywhere. The game world feels [...] alive and lovingly realised.», he writes in his review.

Through the use of miracle flowers, the levels temporarily change in unpredictable ways: Enemies behave differently, environments shift and the game physics can vary briefly. These effects are not just surprises, but influence the course of the levels. They ensure that even familiar sections feel new.

In addition, the game offers a badge system with which you can activate additional movement options or help functions. These badges change the approach to a level and allow you to indirectly adjust the level of difficulty.

All in all, «Super Mario Bros. Wonder» is a varied and colourful spectacle that never fails to surprise. At least that's what Domagoj thinks.

Feels just as comfortable in front of a gaming PC as she does in a hammock in the garden. Likes the Roman Empire, container ships and science fiction books. Focuses mostly on unearthing news stories about IT and smart products.
