Pia's Picks: Missed the solar eclipse, but not the sun obsession

I didn't manage to get solar eclipse glasses – they were sold out before I even realized I needed them. I'm celebrating the sun anyway. Just differently.

I was recently traveling in Greece, and I encountered the sun motif at every turn – on beach towels, in jewelry, in hotel names. No coincidence: after all, the ancient Greeks had their own sun god, Apollo. This came as a pleasant surprise to me, and the sun has held me in its thrall ever since.

On Patmos, for example, there is the Sunset Hotel, which advertises itself with the tranquility of the sunset. The hotel describes its location as a place where time unfolds «at its own rhythm», far from the hustle and bustle and rigid rules. What I liked so much about it: even at dinner, the sun was beaming at me. It felt friendly and inviting.

I also noticed an installation on Hydra: I read about it in Cultured Magazine, and I have been seeing it on social media ever since. In 2022, Jeff Koons transformed an old slaughterhouse into a kind of sun temple – with frescoes, mosaic floors, and a huge golden sun on the roof, whose rays rotate in the wind.

Abstract and graphic

Not every sun has to be golden and round. These objects play with the motif without repeating it in a cliché way: halos, reduced circular shapes, graphic interpretations that also function as pure decorative elements – a kind of small Koons sun for your own living room.

Color gradients like a sunset

The moment when the sky changes from gold to violet to almost black can be translated surprisingly well into motifs. This color gradient looks just as good at home as it does on the horizon.

Lights that mimic an eclipse

A bright ring around a dark core – sometimes subtle, sometimes truly theatrical. These lamps simulate the eclipse effect, at least visually.

And so the sun has been given its permanent stage – without protective glasses, but with a shopping list instead.

In the series «Pia's Picks», you will regularly see my favorite finds. They are things I don't need, but pine for nonetheless.
