The housing is just a frame all around and is open at the front and back. The camera itself should be waterproof to 11m without the housing. But I have never used it in water
The app connects via wifi that is established by the camera. You have to connect your mobile phone to the camera's wifi, then it should work...

Yes, there are many comparisons on YouTube, e.g. to the GoPro Hero 7/8.
I own the Osmo, I really enjoy it. I watched a lot of comparison videos and since budget was also a factor, I bought the Osmo. I don't miss anything for leisure action etc., but I can't compare it with GoPro. Recommendation is to order the battery pack. Greetings
