Leaving aside the security flaws that are supposed to have been corrected, no, you can't connect just because you have access to Wi-Fi. You need a user account with access to the Homebase, which only the owner can create.
For pets, yes, it is possible. All you have to do is tell the camera to activate human detection only and there will be no more animal notifications.
