Can the GPS receiver built into the camera also record the compass direction? or only the coordinates and altitude? Is the GPS position saved when the camera is switched off, or does it have to be searched for again every time it is switched on, which took forever with external Nikon GPS receivers. Can the GPS reception be switched off to save battery power?

Thanks for the reply, could you test this to see if the compass direction is recorded as Exif data on the photo?

Yes, the gps can be switched off. I don't know if a compass direction is recorded. So far I have only used it to set the time and date. That was also quite quick.
