Does the holder snap into place in portrait or landscape format? Or do you always have to loosen the screw and realign it?

No. There is no mechanism for simply switching from one mode to another.

So it is an element that is pushed in from above. Nothing clicks into place. You can lift out the screen without unlocking anything.
The element attached to the screen can be fixed in the clamping thickness using a screw.
