Does this adapter also work for voice calls and playback (i.e. not only audio for music and video)? I have found that this does not work with competing products.

I don't know why this shouldn't work with other adapters, but the original adapter naturally transmits all audio signals, regardless of whether they are phone calls, music, video or notifications.
