I have heard that this product is discontinued by Ubiquiti/Unifi, is under Long Term Support and will be End of Life in the next 12 months. So no more updates etc would be available. Is this true?

See above answer, "UAP-IW-HD" is a Generation 3 device and is not yet on the EOL list:
