I would have to communicate with the control room from a table, over several metres. Is this system suitable for that?

Yes, that will work. There are also videos on YouTube that demonstrate reception depending on the distance.

I use the Rode Wireless for dance lessons or recording videos, it works great. I wear the microphone with transmitter on me and depending on where I want to be heard (music boxes, or mobile phone for video) the receiver... I am very satisfied, but I needed a few extra cables to make it work the way I wanted...

On the receiving side, however, you must have an amplifier or similar; you cannot connect headphones directly to the receiving side. It is simply a wireless microphone.
