I have had a QNAP TS-212 with 2 WDC hard disks of 2 TB each for 5 years. I am basically satisfied. However, I have the feeling that the NAS is slow. In addition, there is always an error message that data from the virus scanner cannot be updated. However, the NAS works. My question: -Is a noticeable jump in speed possible with, for example, a TS-451+ with 8GB? Is it worth buying? Hard disks also have to be paid for Many thanks for the help!

Helpful answer

I can only agree with Brisofka's vote. When I switched from the original TS-420 (0.5 GB RAM) to TS-451+ (8GB RAM), the performance increased significantly! I now strongly believe that the RAM was the main factor in the performance increase.

I switched from a TS-419P II to the TS-451+ for the same reason.
I do not regret the purchase. The device is much faster and also the firmware or security relevant software will be available for the TS-451+ for a long time.
If you plan to use a virtual machine with Windows, Linux or whatever with the existing software, I have to disappoint you. The hardware is definitely too weak for that.
I bought

the TS-451+ because it can act as a pure NAS, i.e. storage reliably in RAID 5, and there is very fast data transfer and 100% availability in the internal network, as well as via VPN (with at least 20 Mbit/s upstream Internet connection).
If I had had 500 CHF more at my disposal, I would certainly have bought a 5 or 6 bay NAS with an additional PCI interface.
Nevertheless, as I said, I don't regret the purchase. It will certainly last me for the next 3-4 years.
