The adapter uses the connector type of Thunderbolt 1 and 2. (The same connector as Mini-DisplayPort.)
Gigabit Ethernet is much slower than all Thunderbolt standards. Thus, it does not matter whether the connector is Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2.
I agree with Avodatasu's answer. I bought the adapter with my MacBook Pro Retina and Thunderbolt 1 was current at the time.
