Shortly thereafter, a dead body with a blackened face is discovered. It is a police officer who had been working undercover in the "gens du voyage" community. However, there is a witness hiding aboard Pierre's houseboat who claims to have lost his memory. The prefect asks the former village policeman for assistance. With the help of a "gitane," Pierre tries to uncover the mystery of the chain letters. Everything points to a conflict between cultures, but another murder casts the crimes in a new light. Pierre realizes that he must trust his intuition to prevent the last part of the prophecy from coming true.
