Climbing ropes

Climbing ropes are an essential piece of equipment for any climber, whether they are scaling a multipitch big-wall or practicing at the local gym. Built to ensure safety and enable climbers to reach new heights, these ropes are designed to be both strong and flexible. Climbers trust in the reliability of these ropes, which serve as their lifeline, to protect against falls and to tackle a variety of climbing applications—from lead climbing to top-roping. Durability, impact force absorption, and handling are key factors that climbers consider, as these attributes directly influence performance and safety during their vertical pursuits.

Important properties of climbing ropes that purchasers should be aware of include diameter, length, type (dynamic or static), and impact force rating. The diameter typically ranges from around 9mm for lightweight, high-performance ascents to about 11mm for heavier use and increased abrasion resistance. Length needs to be suited to the climbing routes—commonly available in 60m to 70m for outdoor climbs, while shorter lengths may suffice for gym use. Dynamic ropes stretch under load to absorb the energy of a fall, making them suitable for belaying climbers, whereas static ropes have very little stretch, making them ideal for abseiling or hauling gear. The impact force rating determines how much force is transmitted to the climber during a fall, with lower numbers indicating better force absorption.
