BR 10 – The Black Swan of the Federal Railways. Although the Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) viewed steam traction as a thing of the past, in 1953, they commissioned the Krupp company in Essen to develop a new Pacific express locomotive. In 1957, under the series number 10, two elegant, partially streamlined examples of the design 2'C1' h3, measuring 26,503 mm in length with a driving wheel diameter of 2,000 mm, were delivered, distinguished by their type of firing. While 10 001 was initially equipped only with an oil supplementary firing system (which was later modified), 10 002 had an oil main firing system from the start. The two locomotives, adorned with silver decorative lines and fitted with conical smoke chamber doors, achieved a top speed of 140 km/h with an induced power of 1,839 kW. Due to their high axle load, the two locomotives were only permitted on certain main routes. Until 1962, they were stationed at Bw Bebra, and later at Bw Kassel, from where they operated in heavy express service on the North-South route and the Main-Weser Railway. The general structural change and the ongoing electrification of the main lines were the main reasons why the series 10 did not go into mass production. In January 1967, 10 002 suffered a break in a connecting rod and was retired. It was scrapped in 1972 at Bw Offenburg. In June of the following year, 10 001 also had to end its active service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn. However, the 109-ton locomotive has been preserved for posterity and can still be viewed today at the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg.
