The WIKING model of the Mercedes-Benz O 305 recalls a strategic shift towards greater safety in road traffic – public transport was to become more noticeable. In the late 1970s, the traditional bus beige gradually gave way to more individualized color designs by transport companies that aimed to increase the visibility of their fleets. Numerous operators switched to a brightly colored band running around the bus – the base and roof were thereafter painted white. With the O 305, a new type of city bus from Mercedes-Benz quickly made its way into the streets of West Germany. A total of around 16,000 units of the O 305 were produced by 1985. Almost all major local transport companies successfully used the O 305 for many years.
