Imitation: The sneaker flowers from Asics
Although the indoor season is finally over, I'm still in the mood for DIYs. Especially when they look as spring-like as these beaded flowers for my trainers. I copied them directly from Asics - I hope that's ok.
In mid-February, the images of the collaboration between the Japanese brand Asics and the British jewellery and accessories brand Completedworks slipped into my Insta feed for the first time. Sporty trainers with filigree beaded flowers - of course I left a little heart.

Since then, I've come across the flowered shoes in all the online magazines and again and again on social media. I could buy them, yes. The «Gel Kayano 20» from Completedworks for Asics - available in white and black, each with white flowers - cost 239 francs. Not exactly cheap, but far from outrageous. The only thing is: I already own a pair of «Gel Kayano 20». Without the floral decoration on them, but in too good a condition to justify investing in a new pair.
So the solution is obvious: instead, I buy a roll of florist's wire for less than five francs, pull my craft box out of the cupboard and start threading.
Make your own beaded flowers
You will need:
- Beads of your choice
- thin craft wire
- Pliers or scissors
- a needle
- a pair of textile or mesh trainers

How it works:
The flowers don't require any skills (no offence, Asics and Completedworks). The great thing is that you can make them as big or small, symmetrical or wild as you like.
Cut about 40 centimetres of wire and fill it with beads as you like. Then form a loop, i.e. a petal, and twist the two ends of the wire together. Thread on the beads again, create a loop and twist closed.

Once you have grown five petals, you can knot the long end of the wire around them a few more times so that nothing can come undone. Then take a conventional sewing needle, push the end of the wire through the eye and «sew» the flower to your trainers. This is exactly why shoes made of textile or mesh are particularly suitable for the DIY.

I wove the wire through the sneaker textile just once, then tied it around the flower again a few times and finally snipped it off with the pliers. The flowers are tight enough for me and I can easily remove them again if necessary.
