They are used in numerous applications and are characterized by their high energy density, which is higher than that of all other primary cells, making lithium thionyl chloride batteries particularly suitable for applications that require low power consumption over long periods. The lithium thionyl chloride battery (LiSOCl2) is a non-rechargeable battery with lithium as the anode and a graphite electrode as the cathode. Thionyl chloride is cathodically reduced and serves both as a solvent and as an electrolyte. With a voltage of 3.6 volts, the cell voltage of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is significantly higher than that of other types of primary batteries. This voltage level is maintained almost consistently throughout the entire discharge duration of the battery.

However, the LiSOCl2 cell chemistry stands out not only for this reason but also for its energy density, which, at up to 710 Wh/kg, surpasses that of all other primary cells.
