External hard disk: external storage space NAS: A Synology NAS (Network Attached Storage) is actually not what the name stands for. It is actually a small server with all the associated functions. A NAS with 2+ hard disks also offers the possibility of a RAID network, which massively increases data security. For example, you can set up a backup internally on the NAS, which backs up the desired folders according to a schedule. If you accidentally delete something, you can retrieve it without any problems. The data could also be encrypted and access restricted to certain users. This is only a small selection of the possibilities. Simply put: A NAS offers various functions around data security and management, which a simple external hard drive lacks.

Backups of pictures / music / documents are no problem, backups of Android OS / Apple OS / app settings are more difficult and time-consuming but not impossible with certain external tools and knowledge. The app monitors the folders you assign to it, the monitored folders are compared with the NAS content and what is not on the NAS is copied to the NAS. Deleted / changed files is a matter of settings the "Backup" tema has many setting modes e.g. "son father grandfather principle". As a hint, if it is important data / pictures I would store them on a RAID 1 NAS (NAS with at least 2 HD / SSDs that mirror (double write) the data). A single hard disk does not last forever, with two you simply replace the defective ones. The NAS recognises the new hard disk and mirrors the data from the existing (still functioning hard disk) to the new hard disk. hard disk. RAID1 NAS are with Synology from 2xx series e.g. DS 218 // DS 216 (e.g. 2xx = number of hard drives: 2 /// e.g. x18 series year 2018).

Hello, I would connect the hard disk to a computer and read out the smart data with CrystalDisk. In the programme you can also set the Acoustic Management... called AAM. However, this has a little influence on the access time.

Could work, but I wouldn't assume so. These things are simply designed to have an internal hard drive. Did you buy a normal 3.5" external hard drive? Manufacturer/model? If you have a normal hard drive, you could remove it from the enclosure and simply install it in the Synology.

I know it works, even though I've never done it myself. But there are instructions on https://www.synology.com/de-de.... Or check out idomix on youtube to see what you can find. I find his videos quite good and informative. But I'll leave it open whether it's worth the effort.

I don't know if the fan is always running. If it is, it's so quiet that I can't hear it even though the station is on my desk. I have not yet tried whether it is possible to install an SSD. According to the documentation, it is possible: https://www.synology.com/de-de.... But I don't know what TRIM looks like. I am very satisfied with the 118: reliable (so far), fast, quiet.
