Due to the modularity of Telegärtner's MPO/MTP cabling system, installers and operators need to spend less time and effort installing, modifying, and maintaining structured communication cabling for today's and tomorrow's data centres (according to EN50173-5:2007 and ISO/IEC 24764:2010). The MPO/MTP connector, which is specified and standardised in IEC 61754-7 and TIA/EIA 604-5, is the first choice, along with the optical LC interface, for an Information Transport System (ITS) in tomorrow's business buildings and data centres, which require ever greater bandwidths and higher speeds.

It can be used for parallel optical applications, such as Infiniband with data rates of up to 120 Gb/s, as well as for future Ethernet protocols with 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s over OM3, OM4, and OS2 multimode fibres. Similar to the well-known MT-RJ connector, the MPO/MTP connector contains multiple fibres in a single high-precision ferrule that can be PC or APC polished to achieve a typical insertion loss of 0.25 dB and a typical return loss of >60 dB for single mode and 0.2 dB insertion loss and >30 dB return loss for multimode.
