Does it make sense to buy the preamps (the WXC-50) and use an old analogue Yamaha amp or would buying the receiver ( WXA-50) be the better solution?

It depends on the quality of the "old" Yamaha amplifier. If it's a really high-quality device, you might get further with it than with the WXA-50. Difficult to say without knowing more details.
