If I want a second USB-C cable for this station (so that I don't always have to crawl under the table when I want to connect my desktop instead of my laptop) what kind of cable does it have to be? a standard USB-C cable is thinner and probably won't work...

Maybe this adapter works in combination with a normal USB cable:

Lenovo USB-C TO USB-A ADAPTER (A - C, 0.14m, 2.0, 3.0, 3.1)

But it is by no means safe. I have the Hybrid Docking Station from Lenovo. It has a USB-A and a USB-C input. It wouldn't be a problem there.
