the optical zoom is 3.60x in contrast to other cameras with 30x (e.g. Nikon Coolpix A900). What does this big difference mean?

Hello Scouser05,
it is exactly as described. The RX100 has a focal length of 28 - 100mm,
but the A900 has a much longer focal length of 24 - 840 mm (focal lengths extrapolated to 35 mm format in each case). This is due to the different arrangement and amount of lens glass. This means you can zoom in much closer on subjects to be photographed with the A900 and with less risk of camera shake thanks

to the optical image stabiliser. Both cameras have optical image stabilisation. It's a great thing when you're travelling.
