What is the thickness (diameter) of the individual rods where they meet the instrument?

It varies, since the material seems to be a thick layer of rubber moulded over a solid core. Using a vernier caliper, mine go from 13.2 mm up to 14.2 mm in diameter. If you need any other dimensions I'd be happy to help.
