Product details
Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, lived from 1832 to 1898 and was an author, clergyman, mathematician, satirist, and photographer. He was the son of a country parson and the eldest of eleven siblings, whom he entertained with self-invented stories from a young age. Additionally, he possessed outstanding mathematical talent and worked for many years as a lecturer in mathematics at the University of Oxford. He became famous primarily for his novels "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1865) and "Through the Looking-Glass" (1871). Carroll was inspired to write "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" during a boating trip in July 1862 that he took with the three daughters of the Liddell family - Alice, Lorina, and Edith. The eight-year-old Alice fascinated him with her wit and keen powers of observation, and thus she became the heroine of the story, which he later wrote down and gifted to her for Christmas in 1864. Wordplay and absurd humor are characteristic of Carroll's books, and together with Edward Lear, he is considered a pioneer of nonsense literature today.
