The estate of one of the greatest storytellers of the 20th century still holds untapped treasures. The anecdotes, reports, stories, and speeches selected here, ranging from the mid-1920s to his death in 1947, are partly little known or unpublished. They reveal the extent to which the author developed a unique sensitivity to social issues, observed reality with care, and found artistic means to craft profound stories with just a few strokes – humorous, ironic, and sometimes even sarcastic. Fallada's belief in the decency of humanity remains unwavering throughout.
