No OCR does not run directly on the scanner but via SW on a PC...

Unfortunately, I cannot answer this question because I disposed of the machine after almost 2 years. The front no longer scanned and, according to HP, repair would be as expensive as a new device (750.00). Therefore NEVER again HP...
