Is a Hue Bridge absolutely necessary to connect the Sync Box with the Hue Play Gradiant Light Strip? Or does it also work without the bridge?

exactly! sync box is just another “device” for the internet bridge and the app usage you need the bridge
Yes you need a Hue Bridge. Sync box works but can’t control anything without Hue Bridge.
