The part just drags a damp cloth behind it, doesn't do much anyway.
It is probably possible to soften the water afterwards, but as the water consumption is quite low, I would rather use softened water or a water filter. Don't let it smell like acetic acid in your home. And if you do, use an odourless descaler based on amidosulfonic acid.
