I heated up the Tefal Snack collection toaster for the first time today (without contents, thoroughly cleaned beforehand). The acrid plastic smell was extremely unpleasant. Who knows the problem? Will it go away? I would never eat anything from the toaster as long as the smell was there. I am now thinking of returning the appliance.

From my experience, it is normal for these units to still smoke, due to production and materials. I plugged the appliance in on the balcony for 10 minutes and let it smoke out. This is also done with new Teflon pans; I always boil the pans with water first and then clean them before using them for the first time. So also with this appliance (simply dry, without water) and this with all inserts! Afterwards, clean with a rinsing agent. I'm not sure now, but I'm sure it says something like that in the instructions.
