Valve allows games with AI-generated content on Steam

In the summer, Valve prevented the publication of games with AI content on Steam. Now there are clear rules for game developers regarding the use of AI on the gaming platform.
Valve, the operator of the gaming platform Steam, has updated its rules for games with generative AI. This emerges from a blog post from the software company. Six months ago, Steam prevented the release of games containing AI-generated content. They asked for patience and some time. The platform operator used this time to work on its own concept of regulations for AI-generated content in games.
Publishers must now disclose whether and how they use AI in the development and execution of their game before it is released. This is done in an updated questionnaire in which developers submit information about the content of their games to Valve prior to release. The results are largely displayed on the shop page of the respective game. The use of AI is divided into two categories.
- Categorised as pre-generated: "Any content created during development using AI tools (artwork, code, audio, etc.). As part of the Steam Distribution Agreement, you represent to Valve that your game does not contain illegal or infringing content and that your game is consistent with your marketing materials. In our pre-release review, we evaluate the output of AI-generated content in your game in the same way we evaluate all non-AI content, including a review of whether your game meets these requirements."
- Considered live generated: "Any content created in-game using AI tools. The same rules apply as for pre-generated AI content, but there is an additional requirement: you must tell us in the content survey what safeguards you are taking to ensure that the AI does not generate illegal content."
AI reporting function in the overlay for the user
In a further step, players will also be given the opportunity to report illegal live AI content in games. This reporting function should be anchored in the overlay of a game and be quick and easy for users to use.
The new rules now allow Valve to publish more games with AI technology on Steam. Last year, there were already 14,532 new PC games. Incidentally, these are only full versions. There are also around 6,000 expansions, DLCs and similar content. Ten years ago, there were just 435 new games. The only exception to the new AI regulation is adult, sexual content that is generated live by the AI. According to Valve, this type of content cannot currently be published.
