As one of the greatest riff masters of all time, James Hetfield requires equipment that performs as monstrously as he does – picks included. When he approached Dunlop in search of a pick that would meet his high standards, Dunlop worked closely with him to develop a solution that not only matches his performance but enhances it.

Dunlop used the Flow Standard Pick 1.0 mm as a starting point. The thrash titan put it through a series of tests and came back with the adjustments he needed to get it just right. First, Dunlop incorporated the beveled edges of the Black Fang Picks to achieve a super aggressive attack that rings out with bright articulation, ensuring that every note and chord makes an impression amidst all the speed and gain. Then, Dunlop made it a bit heavier by increasing it to 1.14 mm – which is typically not available in the standard Flow Pick line – for the perfect balance between mass and articulation. Finally, Dunlop improved the grip and developed a special pattern so that the pick stays in place when Hetfield reaches for it.
