For a long time I have been using the hard drives in various Samsung or Sony TVs, etc. and they run perfectly everywhere. Disadvantage: the audio goes through the amplification of TV, and accordingly bad. Unfortunately, most amplifiers do not play videos through the USB port. That's why you have to plug the external hard drive directly into the TV USB port.

Yes, this should work in principle. The hard disk may have to be formatted by the TV itself when it is connected. Make sure you use the compatible file system specified in the operating instructions.
