Does this hard drive really need a Y-cable and therefore occupy 2 USB ports? (One answer says that data and power each require a USB port).

As usual 1 USB cable -> 1 USB port occupied.

I have never needed the Y-cable. On both Windows machines and Macs, the hard disk runs without problems with a normal USB cable. However, connecting via USB hub did not work for me.
